Server advice served with honesty
Confused asks…
My current IT provider wants me to upgrade my server (it has about 6 months warranty left) and they are recommending I go with a “white box” server over a name brand such as HP or Dell. As I understand it, a white box server is one they build themselves. Is this wise? The reasons I have been told this is a good idea is because 1) it’s cheaper and 2) parts can be supplied in a day or two instead of having to wait longer (I was told up to a week) for the name brand products. What do you recommend?

Dear Confused,
First of all, a big “2 thumbs up” to your IT provider for recommending to replace your server before the end of the warranty. You would be surprised at the number of times we are called out to a client’s office to address a component failure only to find out that the warranty expired months ago.
